Radical SAM enzymes are famous for catalyzing chemically diverse reactions. A mechanistic investigation of NosL, responsible for functionalizing the indole precursor of nosiheptide, now shows that this enzyme catalyzes an unusual fragmentation-recombination reaction that is tolerant to non-natural halogen substitutents.
